5 Simple Ways to Speed up Outlook

TIP: Latest version of Deduper for Outlook allows to remove duplicate emails automatically with a single click.

1. Disable Add-Ins

This step probably is the most effective, since unused add-ins can really slow down your Outlook. No need to dig into Outlook configuration here, since we do have a free application just for this job – EnableDisable for Office. Just launch it and deselect add-ins that you do not use.

2. Download complete IMAP emails

Go to Send/Receive tab, Send/Receive Groups, Define Send/Receive Groups, select All Accounts and Click Edit. Select each account on the left and make sure that “Download complete items including attachments for subscribed folders” is selected. This makes Outlook download whole emails to your computer, not just headers, so it should be much faster.

3. Compact PST files

Outlook is not very efficient with PST file space. When something is deleted, it is left for a long time before it is actually deleted from PST file. To solve this, select each PST file (usually called Outlook or Personal Folders), right click on it and choose Data File Properties > Advanced > Compact Now. This actually deletes all deleted emails, so Outlook will work faster and your computer have more free space.

Also, you might have duplicates in your Outlook, which are using additional space. To safely remove those, we recommend using software such as Deduper for Outlook.

4. Repair PST files

Most Outlook users do not know that Outlook includes a tool to repair your PST file. And PST file gets corrupted very easily and very often. This tool should be located in one of these locations:

  • Disk drive:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\"Office version"
  • Disk drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\"Office version"
  • Disk drive:\Program Files (x86)\"Office version"\root\"Office version"
  • Disk drive:\Program Files\"Office version"\root\"Office version"

Run it and select PST file (PST file path can be found by clicking on it in Outlook > Data File Properties > Advanced).

5. Disable RSS feature

Go to Tool, Options, Other, Advanced and remove the checkbox from "Sync RSS Feeds to the Common Feeds List".
